The final three weeks of a two-month project for the Diamantina Shire Council saw me covering the shire's 3 biggest social events of the year - the Birdsville, Bedourie and Betoota horse race meets. In September each year, an ever-increasing number of people from all around Australia and even overseas descend on the region in 4WD vehicles, buses, motorbikes and aeroplanes. They come to experience horse racing in a desert environment - and all the adventures that come with it. In 2009, the number of racegoers who camped in and around the three small towns that host these events reached almost 10,000. Joining them, I experienced and documented the spectacle of 'the outback races'. I hope you enjoy these moments from all three 2009 race meets in the Diamantina Shire, Queensland, Australia.
