| Riyadh (its name meaning 'garden') is located in the centre of Saudi Arabia and is the capital city of the country. It has a population of around 7 million, with a substantial portion of the population being foreign workers. In such a remote location, most goods and services must be either trucked or flown into the city from elsewhere. Since 1990, the city has experienced rapid economic growth. Riyadh is the centre of commercial activity in Saudi Arabia, with many businesses and companies having their head offices located in the city. In fact, Riyadh is often referred to as the business center of the Middle East.
For several months during 2010, I was based in Riyadh completing projects for the Riyadh Municipality. My time was spent documenting building projects, infrastructure, environmental issues and royal events. From the projects currently being undertaken within the city, it is clear that the aim of the Riyadh Municipality is to transform the city into a dynamic, liveable community by promoting the use of outdoor recreational areas, parks and gardens.
